In the third installment of the Unicorn Chronicles, we go deeper into the fantasy, deeper into the origin stories of Luster’s creatures, deeper into the magic and deeper into the Hunter family drama. There is a lot of action, travel, characters and twists and turns to this book which is ultimately setting the reader up for the final book by ending on a cliff hanger. A worthy and complex installment to the series, I really enjoyed returning to well-known characters and collected quite a few new ones along the adventure. Friendship, family and survival remain as constant themes throughout this story as with the other books.

This is a tale of two quests: Cara Diana Hunter’s search for an ancient story that may unravel the secret of the long enmity between the unicorns and the delvers, and her father’s journey to free Cara’s mother from the Rainbow Prison.

In addition to the old characters, in this book we’re introduced to the centaurs and see more of the delvers. We also meet a mysterious and large man named Fallon who has suspicious ties Luster as well as another villain called The Whisperer—an evil voice that stirs up hatred and manipulates characters to act against the unicorns.

The twists and turns are even more delightful in this book so if you liked the unfolding plot of the first two books then this book will not be a disappointment.

There’s more magic, spell casting, battles, captivity underground, threat of painful death and quite a bit of bargaining and doing things one wouldn’t normally do unless desperate.
